Ultrafiltration is a nanoscale membrane separation technology. The hollow fiber ultrafiltration process uses hollow fiber membranes as the filtration medium and the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the membrane fibers as the driving force. It separates substances of different physical sizes in the solution according to a fixed membrane pore size, so as to achieve purification, separation, purification and concentration of the solution.
The pore size of ultrafiltration membranes ranges approximately from 0.002 to 0.1 μm (MWCO around 1,000–500,000). Dissolved substances and particles smaller than the membrane pores can pass through the membrane as permeate, while substances unable to pass through are retained and concentrated in the reject stream. Therefore, the product water (permeate) contains water, ions and small molecular substances, while colloids, particles, bacteria, viruses and protozoa are removed by the membrane.
